Mulch, Loam & Compost
We carry bulk mulch (Cedar, Hemlock, Pine & Black), loam and compost.
Sold by the yard.
Pick up during store hours, or delivery available.
All of our mulch, loam and compost are sourced locally. We carry true bark mulch. The quality of bark mulch is much higher than that of mulch mixed with wood. Bark mulch will take longer to break down, will maintain color longer, and return more nutrients to the soil as it breaks down.
Hemlock
Features a distinct, rich reddish-brown hue that lasts longer than many alternatives, offering a "New England" look.
-
Durability: Slow to decompose, meaning fewer applications are needed over time.
-
Plant Health: Excellent for moisture retention and insulation, keeping soil cool in summer and warm in winter.
-
Pest Repellent: Naturally less attractive to termites and carpenter ants.
-
No Additives: Typically, pure hemlock mulch contains no added dyes

Black
Black mulch is a popular landscaping choice valued for its deep, high-contrast aesthetic that makes plant colors pop. Our black mulch is made from Spruce, Pine and Hemlock wood shredded and dyed with carbon-based colorants.

Functional benefits:
-
Weed Suppression: The dark, opaque color is highly effective at blocking sunlight, preventing weed seeds from germinating.
-
Moisture Retention: It forms a protective barrier that reduces water evaporation from the soil, meaning you may need to water your plants less frequently.
-
Soil Warming: Black mulch absorbs more solar heat than lighter colors, warming the soil faster in early spring to stimulate root growth and potentially extend the growing season.
-
Erosion Control: A thick layer (2–3 inches) protects bare soil from being washed away by heavy rain or blown by wind.
-
Durability: Many black mulches are triple-processed or use high-quality dyes (like carbon-based colorants) that resist fading better than natural or lighter-colored options.
